Growing up in the industrial North of England, life seemed a contrast between warm people and grey surroundings. The institutions that dominated the skylines and controlled the grounds created a stinging nostalgia of national identity. These almost mythic, immoveable non-hominid entities/corporations that could hug like a Grandad, giving benevolently with one hand yet guarding self-interest with the other, were what gave me my early identity. This grotesque morphing of the 'self' into a fabricated construct of what it should feel to be British or White, poor or patriotic etc, I always found perverted. It's this bizarre relationship between the constructed reality and the true human-self that inspires my work.
Through snippets and pieces of image (drawn or painted), from the surreal and humane or expressive markings and pieces of text, I try to convey this feeling of veiled hypocrisy and invisible insanity that the modern world perpetuates.
