I try to make my photographs of flowers crisp and objective, not soft or impressionistic. I want people to see the beauty in the way the flower is made, in its coloring, texture, complex shape, morphology. I want to combine a scientific, straightforward way of looking at a flower, with techniques that enhance their beauty. I often take them into a studio where I have maximum control over the lighting (and the wind!). I use macro lenses exclusively so that I can get close to the flowers, show more detail, and, being close, giving them a heightened sense of 3-dimensionality.
I have learned I must wait a week or two after finishing the post-processing of the image to see if it’s as good as I thought it was in the heat of the process.I have always been attracted to the creativity and crisp, graphic work of Richard Avedon.
