About Daniel Sayer

  • Biography
At some point in their life, artists often decide to try woodcuts. The act of carving into wood, the inking of the block, the anticipation as the paper is peeled off to reveal a stark image, all adds up to an irresistible, medieval technique. Why attempt woodcuts in 2016? Personally, it was something I could do whilst film-making was on hold as I looked after twin boys. Artistically, it was satisfying to create simple images again, images like old film stills, or from a children's book of fables, or old testament tales. I was inspired by a book of Edward Münch's self-portraits. Everyone is aware of The Scream as a painting, but it began as a woodcut. What are those curving forms of Münch, if not wood grain? Throughout his life, he returned to this technique to record his changing face, roughly hewn into wood blocks, freehand. Here we come to another reason for a return to old techniques. Are we not all tired of slick digital images, of images on computer screens, of images on televisions. Do we not long for a tactile image, where the paper is rough, where the black of the ink is as black as the night? Do we not yearn for an image we might caress?
