Often my work is created using the most basic of tools. Graphite pencils on paper as I enjoy the simplicity, originality and control obtained when using the medium.
I like to produce almost photorealistic works, often from photographs that sometimes use intelligent line drawing to help explain the image.
The inspiration for my work, comes from my life. I use my work as an almost visual diary of my journey as a young gay man living in the world, today. My work captures the people I have met, friends I have made, sometimes via social media, such as my HASHTAG series of work. I spend enormous amounts of time describing in meticulous detail the men that inspire me or men I admire for whatever reason. For me its a way of honouring that person. The art I produce at first may seem like a collection of nudes and portraits, and they are, but they are also more than that, they explain what I am thinking or how I’m feeling at that particular moment in time. They are a personal reflection of my me. As a whole I want my work to be viewed as a celebration of men.
“Show me the man you honour, and I will know what kind of man you are…”
My aim as an artist is to create engaging works that captures the attention of the viewer, not because they think its ‘nice’, but hopefully because it will resinate beyond the surface image, conjuring up an emotion within; wonder, lust, admiration, whatever that thought or feeling may be.
