About Douglas Adam Karson

  • Biography

Douglas Karson is an American-born artist living and working in Bristol. Self-taught, his practice incorporates storytelling, poetry and ink on paper with a particular focus on painting. Bold colour, geometry and a sensitivity to line and balance characterise his paintings, which are informed by personal and spiritual philosophies. His ongoing series, THE RULES, uses elements from Greco-Roman philosophy, Chinese mythology, Yogic theory and Hindi philosophy to formulate a process of painting-as-manifesto, or manifesto-as-painting. A rigid formal framework and methodology engenders infinite potential outcomes, each a cross-cultural message suffused with subtle politics.

Douglas believes passionately in creating and nurturing artist communities. He founded Art Battle UK, a live painting event that brings artists and art lovers together in a unique environment. Douglas has participated in and organised over 30 group and solo exhibitions internationally in the UK and the United States, and his work has been featured in magazines such as Art Reveal and Creativ Paper.

    Event: Becoming

    Dates: 4 Aug 2017 - 31 Aug 2017

Venue: The Farm Pub, Bristol, UK

This collection of works focuses on the pursuit of Universal Truths.

The principle works; We are the Cosmos, Rainbow Ladder, and Refraction; refer directly the truth of light, balance and yoga. Despite human disagreement, there are truths in this Universe and they are true whether we believe them or not.

Light is the great trickster. We see it as white while it carries the full spectrum. This illusion and light’s ability to work as both particle and wave define us, our existence and all matter.

Balance is always present whether we are aware of it or not. We might think we are separate from the natural world, yet it is intrinsic to our humanity and animal nature.

Yoga means unity. We are all unified by the truths of what we are. We are unified in the cycle of life, death and rebirth.

The other works involved in this show are all related to the process of arriving at these truths.
