About Christopher Shoulder

  • Biography

My work is about escapism, leaving the mundane world behind and going on a crazy, shiny, dazzling trip. A glorious, fantastical romp. I work with large pieces of coloured, textured and variegated glass to produce mesmerizing figurative and fantastical wall panels. I love every aspect of the creative process, from the initial sketches to the hands on, practical stuff. It’s always exciting sticking the first - and last - piece of glass onto the wood. Every piece of glass and mirror is hand cut by me. It is laborious, time consuming work, and I love it. For me, the process of mosaic making is like painting, only with glass. However, unlike paint the light and colours are forever moving and changing, playing entrancing tricks on the eye, inviting you into its depths.

I have loads of disparate inspirations for my work. The late Niki de Saint Phalle is a hero of mine. I also love the work of Harry Clarke, the late Irish illustrator, whose stained glass work is incredible, but whose illustrations are truly astounding. The Pre Raphaelites and Marc Chagall are also an influences. Conversely, the bawdiness of old school, British humour gets me going too; saucy seaside postcards, Carry-On comedies and people watching. All in the mix.

I am greatly stirred the work of Kate Bush, Bjork and Roisin Murphy, each one different from the other, and all singular in their artistry. These women set my mind free to race where it will and tap into the wild and wonderful.

I delight in my work and hope others will too.
