About Chris Daniels

  • Biography
I make abstract paintings concerned with the principles of colour and form. The forms are taken from a range of selected elements – signs, shields, mountains, and through drawing and simplification (and often repetition) these forms become ambiguous, reductive, and abstract. The colour choices come from an intuitive selection, and I am influenced by the decisions made in design and advertising as much as art history. Masking tape is generally used to control the painting gesture inside the hard-edged form, creating a visual tension between the shapes. I often work in series, using the same forms in different compositions and colours, keeping to the rules I set for the sequence, altering the optical rhythms through these decisions. The paintings are an ongoing investigation into how they function as an exposure to the effectiveness of the colour choice channelled through a self-restrained structure.
