    Sometimes I use small models as an aid to composition - bits of cut-up paintings, toy bricks etc. This particular construction was the starting point for the painting "Pioneers' Gate."

    When painting "en plein air" I mostly use watercolour, capturing the essence of the landscape, the light and the changing weather. I refer to these sketches later when I am painting in oils in the studio on a larger scale. These vines look spectacular in the Autumn as the leaves change colour.
