About John Armstrong-Millar

  • Biography
Born and brought up in Belfast (1959) where he studied photography at The College of Art & Design .His first commission, at the age of 18 was to cover Pope John Paul the 2nd`s visit to Ireland. After completing his studies John moved to London where he began his career in one of the world’s most photogenic cities. Since then he’s lived and worked all over the place producing a huge variety of images and eventually settling, for the moment, in the South West of France. After travelling in Japan he became interested in the form of Hikau poetry and the minimalist structure of Japanese caligraphy which illustrates perfectly the concept of less is more. This concept has influenced much of his work, in particluar the «Silhouette» collection, which uses the mere outline of the human form to convey an entire message, each shot being a complete story in itself. He’s not looking to shock or stun. His images are often gentle and thoughtful, capturing the light the colour and the gestures found in everyday life. John looks for the unseen, the unnoticed, his eye sees the world differently and thats what he wants to convey to the viewer. His passion is for colour and his style is instantly recognisable: he produces stunning colour images, but look at his black and white shots and you’ll find them equally possessing and moving. In fact his images have been likened to poems, drawing the viewer in with a certain symmetry and making a connection for a moment, to send us a message. Essentially that is John’s purpose: he wants his work to capture a moment and say something to the viewer.
