Living in a rural area offers many opportunities to enjoy nature; this hiking trail is a favorite place I like to walk my dogs. The rock formations in the distance are called “barrancas” which means “a steep bank or bluff.” Though I’ve never climbed to the top, I understand there is a 50-foot drop on the other side.
I find myself drawn to scenes that are intersected by roads, pathways or rivers. The road creates a division of shapes, leading the eye into the composition. Perspective can be challenging to convey, but I love to do it!
"Trail to the Barrancas" is painted on a 16"W x 12”H panel using oil and palette knives. My knives and silicon tools (similar to spatulas) allow me to make bold marks and visible texture. I use these rather than brushes almost exclusively when painting on location.
