"James Earley is one of the most important artists in the world today" International Contemporary Art Curator Magazine 2019

I wanted to create a painting that paid tribute to the innocent victims of war, a modern day version of Picasso's Guernica. The figures in the background are prisoners who have been tortured at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. I wanted the painting to ultimately show the craziness of war and its devastation and how torturing people was turning these people into martyrs and so the wheel keeps turning.

In 2019 I was honoured to be informed that this painting won the first prize at the prestigious London Biennale

I wanted to paint "The Place Of The Skull" in a realism style using oil paints on canvas. I wanted to create a documentary of the consequences of war.
I primed the canvas in red paint and started building the layers of the oil painting initially using large brushes and gradually decreasing the size of the brushes until I used single hair brushes for the smallest of detail.

My portrait style is hyperrealism and I am influenced by the work of artists such as the American Artist Chuck Close
