Stump forest of Silver Birch above a flooded vale… in this painting I wanted to show how the ferny floor of the forest in early morning sunshine contrasted with the saturated floor of the vale in partial shade. The stumps are sculptural remains alive only with moss and fungal growth. The vale below has course spiky grasses and gorse bushes that are bright yellow and purple in late Summer. Always wet and boggy this area in 2014 is flooded; the area below has recently been cleared of Pine and Birch to maintain the biodiversity of the area. It is rare ancient Heathland.
