“Saeta” is an acrylic painting on canvas 77cms width x 102cms height. It is part of a series of paintings called ‘The Jazz Series’. This series of paintings has been inspired by listening to the music of Miles Davis and this particular work has been inspired by one of Miles’ most enduring and innovative achievements, Sketches of Spain. Saeta can be defined as an improvised Andalusian song of lamentation or penitence sung during religious procession. It is understood in southern Spain as a spontaneous outburst of religious feeling. It is a revered form of song, whose form and style has evolved over many centuries through flamenco culture. Saetas evoke strong emotion and are sung most often during public processions. Miles Davis’ musical work is based on an Andalusian folk song, about a woman who encounters the procession taking Christ to Calvary. She sings the narrative of his passion and the procession with full brass accompaniment moving along. The painting makes reference to the same procession and brings together the feeling of movement, passion and grace associated with the flamenco music of southern Spain.
The painting is built in layers of acrylic paint combining thin washes of colour and heavy layers of impasto sometimes mixed with encaustic and fine granulated sea shells. The surface of the painting is burnished and abraded as the layers are built. As well as being stimulated by the music I take inspiration from colourists such as Barbara Rae, John Hoyland and Hans Hoffman alongside African art and Art Brut. Prints on photo quality paper are available. Limited edition . See details .
The painting is shipped in a robust custom made cardboard crate (same as those used to transport large screens). The painting is bubble wrapped to protect the canvas. Further wrapping is made with corrugated card. A wooden frame is placed inside the cardboard crate to preserve the structural strength of the packaging. Each painting is insured to its sale value. Shipping costs within the U.K. take into consideration weight and insurance. U.K. shipping costs for this artwork are £75
