Original artwork description:

I paint realism portraits of people who, when I see them they hit me like a sledge hammer. My hyperrealism portrait of Rory has such a story behind it.

I met Rory early in 2021 outside Starbucks next to the Embankment Tube Station in London. Rory was from Birmingham and lived on the streets of London. Rory was a child, suffering from mental health issues. His fears and anxiety echoed throughout the streets of London. His emotions were sharpened in a time when Covid 19 was a real threat to the homeless of London.

Rory was young, just a kid who saw the cold and lonely streets as an escape from the violence of his childhood.

I knew once I met Rory that I had to create a hyperrealistic oil painting that had so many stories embedded in it. I had to paint with so much detail and accuracy to find the correct facial expression for Rory and at the same time I had to show the world pass him by in the window reflection. I gave prominence to Rory by using sharp and aggressive colouring compared to the slightly faded background.

I want this work to hit you like a sledge hammer. Every time you see it. This cannot continue in our society where a child is given up on by everyone.
