Original artwork description:

I remember a famous Life Magazine cover that was published during the Vietnam War. It was titled "The blunt reality of war in Vietnam" and showed "A Vietcong, mouth taped for security, held prisoner by the US Marines". I was struck by the parallels that this issue has with the issue of racism in the US today. I wanted to produce a modern day version of the magazine cover with a small Afro-American boy who is imprisoned in the world of racism replacing the imprisoned Vietcong and I changed the wording slightly as it only needed changing slightly as the issues are so tied together in a rope of suffocation.
I hope that the viewer will see and feel the pain and frustration that the Afro-American community have had to endure for centuries. I hope the rage will grow.

I wanted to paint "Rage Against The State" in a realism style using oil paints on canvas. I wanted to create a documentary of the consequences of racism.
I primed the canvas in red paint and started building the layers of the oil painting initially using large brushes and gradually decreasing the size of the brushes until I used single hair brushes for the smallest of detail.
