This painting was developed from sketches made after a day trip to the town of Noto in the south east of Sicily near Syracuse in 2013. The Cathedral is at the top of a hill dominating the town. Made of a crumbling bright orange stone the facade hides a dignified and surprisingly plain interior. Started as a watercolour and charcoal drawing I developed it with gouache used thickly like oil paint and gold / copper interference colours to highlight details.
watercolour, gouache, acrylic
