I believe in giving people close to you their flowers whilst they’re still around. This portrait of my eldest sister, Bee, looks to do just that and acts as a representation of my appreciation & respect for her. The vibrancy of the colours act as a motif symbolic of our Sierra Leonean and Lebanese heritage. My sister was born in Sierra Leone, thus the green and blue are taken from the Sierra Leone flag; with the red head scarf representative of the Lebanese symbol of the mythical phoenix. Paradoxically by working with a monochrome medium such as ballpoint pen, I strive to celebrate people of colour by showing that there is more to a person than just their pigmentation.
