Along the Chama River was a perfect place to spend a summer day painting. I was attracted to that glimpse of red rock on the hillside peeking thru the trees. Much higher up the rock is in shadow and a beautiful burgundy; the foliage creates a lovely complement of colors.
"Afternoon in Abiquiu" measures 16"H x 12"W and is an oil on flat panel. I began the painting with a thin wash of oils using a brush, using palette knives after I had blocked in the composition.
