Titled for a favourite song by our mutual favourite band, the image depicts my old friend Holly, taken from a rediscovered image taken years ago at her house. The title suits in another sense, that the subject and artist play the role of self-medicating patient. We fell out for a few years - I am very pleased that our falling out is in the past, and our rift is healed. Holly carefully and deliberately lights a joint. She blends into the room, the way she lights it looks methodical and natural - almost meditative. The act of painting played the same role for me. In that sense, it is both portrait and self-portrait.
