I started this painting en plein air on the north end of Pfeiffer Beach.
Most of Big Sur’s beautify is obvious – a ragged coastline, and lots of ocean blue, but some attractive features are practically hidden, and Pfeiffer Beach is one such gem, with famous purple sand and wave-tunneled rocks just off shore. It is mesmerizing to see the golden light passing through this opening at sunset.
I like observing the reflections in the water – how they move and break on the waves, how the colors of the water itself and the sky effect the color of reflections.
I watched the day change to dusk, hurrying to capture the luminous color and intriguing effects of quickly setting sun.
Materials: oil on oil primed Claessens Belgian linen on 11"x14"x0.2" gatorfoam archival art panel. The painting is varnished and ready to be framed. It will easily slot into a standard 11"x14" picture frame.
oil paint, linen canvas, archival Gatorfoam panel, varnish
