The lowland heath next to my lodge is ancient: it supports plants that survive in shallow, poor nutrient and often waterlogged soil. My painting reflects the ancient similarities - fallen trees, scrubland, detritus from dead or dying trees and plants, mainly gorse, heather and birch and pine. A landscape where you might see pehistoric carnivors and pterodactyls roaming. These are my thoughts as I paint using a reduced palette and layers of diluted pigment showing the graphite under drawing and capturing the character of an 'ancient lowland heath'
