This is the view from the top of the Harthope valley in the Cheviots. Hart is an old word for deer. Harthope is an ambition to catch a deer. To the East of the Cheviots is English land ruled by the Percy family. To the West is Scotland ruled by the Douglas family.
The top of this hill used to be the boundary and wars have broken out between England and Scotland because hunting parties disagreed about where they killed the hart. This hunting ground is called the Chevy chase.
I painted this en plein air and it was bloody cold. Paint goes stringy just before it freezes.
